An in-depth study of the Portuguese grammar and syntax combined with both oral and written practice. Also included are studies of Brazilian and Portuguese culture, and literature. Prerequisites: PORT 212 and a sufficiently high score on the placement examination. (3, 3sh credits)

Beginning Portuguese - PORT101, 102
An intensive introduction to the fundamentals of the Portuguese language. Focus includes grammar, spelling, composition, dictation, conversation, reading, pronunciation, culture, and civilization. Does not apply toward a Portuguese minor. No credit for students with previous college-level Beginning Portuguese credit. (3, 3sh credits | offered Summer)
Beginning Portuguese Composition - PORT161,162
This course introduces the techniques of descriptive and narrative writing. It highlights sentence construction and the tenses of the verbs. (3, 3sh credits)
Beginning Portuguese Conversation - PORT171, 172
Discussion of real life situations using structures in everyday language. Use of interactive exercises. (3, 3sh credits)
Beginning Portuguese Grammar - PORT151, 152
Fundamentals of Portuguese grammar, laying the foundation for further studies. Taken concurrently with Phonetics. (3, 3sh credits)

Brazilian Cuisine - HMEC201, 202
This course offers a selection of traditional Brazilian cooking recipes and a study of these recipes, socially and geographically speaking, in terms of the Brazilian culture. (1, 1sh credits)
Brazilian Cultural Experience Project - PORT312
This project gives the students an opportunity to reflect upon many cultural aspects, apart from experiencing how life will be after they leave the classrooms: they get to go on field trips and tours in historical cities, lectures, and direct readings, etc. (3sh credits)
Brazilian Literature - PORT330, 331
Readings and general studies of the Brazilian literature and its background. Emphasis on short stories, plays, poetry, and selected segments of novels. (3, 3sh credits)

Communication and Media: A Brazilian Perspective - PORT/COMM281
This course is used as an introduction to the study of the human communication process. Students have the unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with documentaries, film presentations, interviews, and take a trip to the Brazilian Hope Channel. (3sh credits)
Current Events in Brazil - PORT/COMM285, 286
We will be offering a weekly review of news coverage of events that are happening in Brazil. This course includes preparation through newspaper, study of television, news magazines, and also radio reports. (1, 1sh credits)
Directed Study - PORT395, 396
The students who are qualified, with the consent of the Director of the Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture program, will be able to undertake an investigation which is suited to their background and experience. (May be taken any term. Maximum of four [4] hours permitted.) (1–4sh credits)
Folklore of Brazil - PORT300, 301
Insight on the customs, traditions, holidays, costumes, food, music, song, and dances of the Brazilian people. (3, 3sh credits)
Independent Reading - PORT295, 296
During this course, the students will be required to choose and read about a selected topic, which will be adapted to the student’s language level (grammar, vocabulary, etc.) and they’ll have to make a presentation of their reading report at the end of the term. (1, 1sh credits)
Intensive Portuguese Review I - PORT191, 192
An intensive review of the fundamentals of the Portuguese language. Focus includes grammar, composition, dictation, oral expression, phonetics, spelling stylistics, and orthography. Does not apply toward a Portuguese minor. Not open to students in PORT101, 102 (3, 3sh credits | offered Summer)
Intensive Portuguese Review II - PORT291, 292
An accelerated review of concepts of the Portuguese language including grammar, composition, dictation, oral expression, phonetics, spelling stylistics, and orthography. Prerequisites: PORT102 or PORT192 and a sufficiently high score on the placement examination. (3, 3sh credits | offered Summer)
Intermediate Portuguese - PORT211, 212
An accelerated review of written and spoken Portuguese with special emphasis on grammar, orthography, syntax, and phonetics. Daily compositions are due based on topics from everyday life. Lectures and readings on Portuguese culture introduce students to the history, politics, geography, arts, and literature of Brazil and Portugal. Prerequisites: PORT 102 and a sufficiently high score on the placement examination. (3, 3sh credits)
Intermediate Portuguese Composition - PORT261, 262
Written Portuguese with special emphasis on grammar, orthography, and syntax at the intermediate level. At least one composition due each week based on everyday topics. (3, 3sh credits)
Intermediate Portuguese Conversation - PORT271, 272
Oral practice in class with emphasis on grammar, phonetics, and syntax at the intermediate level. Lab required (3 hrs/week). (3, 3sh credits)
Intermediate Portuguese Grammar - PORT251, 252
Review of grammar combined with oral and written practice at the intermediate level. (3, 3sh credits)
Internship - PORT397
One (1.5) credit repeatable for a total of three (3) credits for the whole academic year. 110 semester hours are compulsory for one (1) semester internship credit. Internship’s credit is included in the full-load taken by the student. (1.5–3sh credits)
